One of the biggest worries I hear from my clients (especially those traveling with toddlers!) is: "Mimi, if my little one can’t ride the big roller coasters, does that mean I have to miss out too?"

The answer is a resounding NO! 🎢
Disney’s Rider Switch (sometimes called "Child Swap") is a total game-changer for families. It allows one group to ride while another stays back with the non-rider, and then—here’s the best part—you swap places without waiting in the long line again!
How to Use Rider Switch in 4 Easy Steps
Step 1: The "Huddle" at the Entrance Bring your entire group (including the toddler in the stroller!) to the entrance of the attraction. Look for a Cast Member—they are usually near the Lightning Lane entrance or holding an iPad. Tell them: "We’d like to set up a Rider Switch, please!"
Step 2: The "Scan and Split" The Cast Member will divide you into two groups:
Group 1: These are the people riding first.
Group 3 (The Swappers): These are the people waiting with the non-rider. The Cast Member will scan the MagicBands or tickets for Group 2 to give them a "Rider Switch Entitlement."
Step 3: Group 1 Rides, Group 2 Plays Group 1 enters the line (Standby or Lightning Lane). Group 2 is now free! You don’t have to stand at the ride exit. This is the perfect time to grab a snack, find a nearby "low-thrill" ride like Dumbo or the PeopleMover, or just find some shade. 🍦
Step 4: The Big Swap! Once Group 1 is finished, they take over with the little one. Group 2 (up to 2 people) can now head straight to the Lightning Lane entrance. Scan your bands, and you’re on your way to the front of the line!
Mimi’s Pro Tips for 2026:
The Bonus Rider: If you have an older child who is tall enough, they can actually ride twice—once with Group 1 and again as the "plus one" for the person in Group 2!
Lightning Lane Logic: Remember, if Group 1 wants to use the Lightning Lane, they must have a valid Lightning Lane Multi Pass or Single Pass. You cannot use Rider Switch to "bypass" buying a pass for the first group.
Check the App: Your Rider Switch entitlement will show up right in your My Disney Experience or Disneyland app so you can keep track of it.
